Trails You Must Do in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

While this post might seem a bit late for travelers planning their summer vacation, we really think that Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a destination that shouldn’t be skipped by any traveler. The park is home to some of the most awe-inspiring waterfalls in the world, including Miners Falls, Sand Point Falls, and Grand Sable Falls. Each one of these waterfalls is breathtaking, and they are even more spectacular when you hike to the top of a cliff to view them. Though the park is open year-round, we recommend visiting in the summer for a better chance of viewing the waterfalls.

The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has a lot of trails to choose from, but here are three that you can’t miss!

  • The first one is Otter Cove Point Trail, which is an easy five-mile hike located on the northwestern tip of the Pictured Rocks. This is a great place to view Pictured Rocks from a different angle, and it is a great place to see Lake Superior.

The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Otter Cove Point Trail is located in the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan. This trail can be accessed from Lake Michigan Road off the M-107. There are two trailheads for the Otter Cove Point Trail: one at the end of the road for the Point Iroquois Lighthouse and the other at the end of the road for the Otter Cove Campground. The lighthouse and campground are both on Lake Superior, with the campground on the south shore and the lighthouse on the north shore. The trailhead for the lighthouse and the campground are just over a mile apart.

  • The second one is the Miners Castle Loop Trail, which is a six-mile trail that starts near the ranger station. The loop trail is a difficult hike, but the view is one that you can’t get anywhere else.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore isn’t only about the cliffs: You can also enjoy hiking on big boulders, beaches, and forests. The Miners Castle Loop Trail, which is part of the North Country National Scenic Trail, has it all. The 6-mile hike begins at Chapel Beach, heads north along the Lake Superior shoreline, and loops back to the beginning. The trail is most enjoyable during the mid-summer when the trees are in full bloom.

  • The third one is the Sand Point Trail, which is a three-mile hike along Lake Superior. The Sand Point Trail is a 0.6-mile trail that leads to a sandy beach along Lake Superior’s shoreline in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The trail can be accessed by a 0.3-mile walk on a gravel road that the Sand Point Ranger Station begins. It is a relatively easy trail and requires no special equipment. For an extra challenge, hikers can walk on the shoreline rocks that border the beach.

Sand Point Trail is a relatively easy hike through sand dunes and along a rocky beach. The trail begins at Lake Superior’s Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and is about three miles long. The trailhead is near the Munising Falls Visitor Center. The trail is easy to follow and is mostly level, although there are a few hills, and the trail crosses over a couple of small creeks. The trail is a loop, so you can begin anywhere along with it, and it is possible to extend it by continuing past the turnaround point and adding on the Dunes Nature Trail.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is a beautiful national park well worth a visit. The most striking feature of the park is the large sandstone cliffs that line the shore of Lake Superior.
